Ancelotti: “I ask my players to play an intelligent game”

Italian Carlo Ancelotti, coach of Real Madrid, assured, after his team’s 2-0 victory against RB Leipzig, that “at this time of the season you cannot ask the players for a fantastic game” due to the load of matches, and what he does is ask them to “play an intelligent game to win” the matches.

“We have won and deserved it. It’s a time of the season when I can’t ask the players to play a fantastic game, I can ask them to play an intelligent game to win games”, he said at a press conference.

“We would like to get ahead on the scoreboard a little earlier, but the games, especially in the ‘Champions League’ and against this team that gave a boost by winning well against Dortmund… we had a bit of concern with this game, but we fulfilled it” , he continued.

“Getting angry or worried in a match is normal. In the ‘Champions’ I don’t remember a quiet game, it hasn’t happened and it will never happen. What stands out a lot about this club is that the players are very Madridistas, and this ultimately counts. The weight of the shirt is very important and makes you feel like a Real Madrid fan like all fans”, he added.

An Ancelotti who once again downplayed the noise around the figure of the Brazilian Vinicius Junior: “What is being talked about, Vinicius doesn’t pay attention. He is focused and centered. He likes to play soccer. Vinicius is stronger because he is looking for continuity in his game and more success in front of goal. He is stronger because of this, not because of what is talked about,” he commented.

Continuing with proper names, he joked about the scoring moment of the Uruguayan Fede Valverde. “What seemed strange to me last year is that he only scored one goal with the shot he has. I told him that if I am not able to score at least ten goals in a season I have to tear up my card and go on pension. Today he scored with his left, which I never saw him shoot with his left (laughs); that means he is gaining confidence. The best in the world? We will have to wait a bit, ”he said.

In addition, he assigned duties to the French Aurelien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga. “A very intelligent player. And he is already. When one in midfield has this quality of positioning well, although he has to improve with the ball… but the fact of being intelligent allows him to join a team like Madrid and do well”, he said about the former, who debuted in the League of Champions at the Santiago Bernabéu.

For his part, regarding Camavinga, he urged him to improve in games with a lower rhythm and worked: “When the game is broken, his energy stands out more than when the game is more positional. Using this energy that he has in the overflow is a bit more complicated; it is something he has to learn. When the match breaks down, he stands out more. He has to learn to position himself well when the game is more controlled at a tactical level”, he valued.

Finally, he insisted that they are not going to force the Frenchman Karim Benzema ahead of Sunday’s derby against Atlético de Madrid. “With Karim the strategy did not change. It may be that some combinations turned out better, but it would not change much. We will see in the next few days if he trains or not, but as I said we are not going to risk anything; if he trains well on Saturday he will play on Sunday”, he concluded.
